Wedding & Formal Wear
Pitchford’s Specialty Division

When your bridal memories, family heirlooms, and designer garments deserve the very best, ask for the Pitchford touch! A Richmond tradition in bridal gown care for over 70 years, Pitchford’s merged with HandCraft Cleaners in 2005. As preservation specialists, the staff at Pitchford’s is trained in the art of textile conservation. In fact, we have clients along the east coast that send their heirlooms to Pitchford’s for cleaning. Every item cleaned is given expert, personal attention. Because we have three cleaning methods available to use (PERC, Stoddard solvent, and Wet Cleaning) we are able select the best method for your garment or heirloom. Some of our specialties include:

  • Bridal Gown Cleaning and Preservation (pre and / or post wedding day)
  • Couture and Designer Garment Care, including St. John Knits, Armani, Chanel, Dior, and Worth
  • Period garment restoration and cleaning. Our customers include:
    • Maymont Foundation
    • Virginia War Memorial Foundation
    • Virginia Historical Society
    • Richmond Ballet
  • Beaded, sequined, and formal wear
  • Christening Gowns

Wedding Gown Cleaning and Preservation at Pitchford’s
Why do so many brides choose Richmond’s premier wedding gown specialist? We have the experience, tools, and techniques available to remove difficult stains (even those you can’t see!), while treating the delicate fabric, lace, and beading with the care it requires. Here’s how the process works:

You may either drop off your gown at HandCraft or make an appointment at Pitchford’s.

Your gown is inspected and tested prior to cleaning. We analyze fabrics, dyes, and weaves, and note ornaments and their composition. Our detailed notes determine which preservation technique is right for your dress, and we provide a cost estimate.
Each spot is analyzed and uniquely treated prior to the dry cleaning process.

Once your gown has been pre-spotted and cleaned, it is thoroughly inspected.
Any repairs are made, and the gown is hand-pressed.
Your gown is then carefully packaged using the finest museum-quality archival materials.
We will call you when it is ready for pick-up, and provide instructions on proper storage techniques.
